ENGLISH LANGUAGE (20-21)
Topic outline
-
Content in this section is applicable for Paper 2, Question 1. This exam question is worth 20 marks and is assessed equally on AO1 and AO2.
AO1 - Apply appropriate methods of language analysis, using associated terminology and coherent written expression.
AO2 - Demonstrate critical understanding of concepts and issues relevant to language use.
Question: Using the appropriate terminology to explain your findings, examine the language development stage of the/both child-participant(s) as evidenced in the transcript. You should identify and analyse the phonology, grammar and meaning of their utterances. Use your knowledge of theories and concepts of child language acquisition to support your answer.
Hint: For this question, make sure you have an awareness of the different lexical and grammatical stages of development and associated ages. You will need this information to see if the child/children in the transcript are below, meeting or exceeding language development for their age. In this question, they group lexis, semantics and pragmatics under one focus of 'meaning' - do not write about them individually. You will also need to comment on phonology and grammar. Make sure you link to the overarching theories such as: nativist, behaviourist, social interactionist and cognitive as well as newer approaches such as generative grammar and usage-based models.
-
Try using your CLA knowledge and skills on these transcripts. They are longer than the ones that you would see in your exam, but in every other sense they are just what you need to practice on.
-
Try comparing these two answers and giving them a grade.
Put them side by side on the screen.
Mark scheme is at the bottom of Candidate 2's answer.
