Resources on offer
Books
To search for a book, use the Heritage online catalogue, search for either the author, title or subject. This search will give books location as a shelf number, you can use Book Location tab on the library page to see where subjects are location in the ILC. Most resources have a numerical shelf number. Within this number sequence books are arranged alphabetically by the first three letters of the author's name. For example, a Business Studies book by Malcolm Surridge will be found on the shelf at 658 SUR. The Heritage online catalogue will also inform you how many copies we have and whether the books are available to borrow. Most books are two-week loans but there are exceptions which are 1 week or even just a day loan. Copies of the most popular textbooks are kept and may be borrowed from the Issue Desk; these are for reference use only. Additionally, there is a general Reference area on the first floor of the ILC for dictionaries etc. The Heritage online catalogue allows you to renew your books at least twice, as long as your books are not overdue. Renewals can also be made by telephone, the library direct line is 01483 411255, or if you are on campus just head to the Issue Desk with your ID card.
eBooks
We have many eBooks available to use. Our main College eBook collection is our VLE eBook Website. We now have over 270 eBooks, textbooks, revision guides and self-help books. The link for VLE is found on the left on the ILC-Library Godalming Online page. If using VLE on a college desktop the website will automatically recognise the IP address and log you straight in. Alternatively, there is ProQuest, which is also on the left-hand side of the library page. This website must be used with care which means that we, as an institution, have no control over which eBooks are available. This also means that some books might be older editions or for the wrong exam board. Very Short Introductions, allows you access to over 800 eBooks on a wide variety of subjects. Other eBook websites include JSTOR Secondary Schools Collection and Gale eBook collection, these are both American based eBook websites.
DVDs
The library has a collection of over 1000 DVDs on offer for you to loan. Loans are limited to two per borrower and for withdrawal your student ID card is essential. You must be 18 to borrow any 18 certificate films. Please be aware that DVDs are for short loan only = they are free to borrow but have fines of 50p a day for overdue loans.
Magazines, Journals and Newspapers
The library subscribes to over 60 magazine titles for a variety of subjects, so whatever subject you may be studying, there will be at one relevant magazine or journal that would be useful or interesting. Many magazines have online archival websites, please be aware with some of these websites you can only have a certain number of active users on the website at time, but those websites are clearly marked on the Website and Subscription table. All the username and passwords are listed next to the link. Current issues are arranged alphabetically on the magazine display shelves, either side of the internal staircase on the first floor of the ILC library. Back copies are kept behind the copies on display, any questions just any of the librarians. You also have access to the Heritage Online Catalogue to search by subject for journal articles, since all the magazines are catalogued. This will give you the journal/magazine details and date of publication. While the journal/magazines are for reference only the articles may be photocopied. ProQuest is an excellent resource which allows you to research British newspapers and magazines, this accessible via the Useful Website List.
