SPEECHES
Don't be too clever with your choices. Pick speeches (contemporary and period) that you like and connect with, even if they'd been done a million times before! In terms of drama school they will have seen ALL of the speeches done at some point so if you can bring an honesty and connection to the piece it doesn't matter if it's one they've heard once that day or 30 times that day.
Pick plays that you know, or like the sound of and are prepared to read! Know the plays back to front (whatever you pick). Remember, you are picking characters THAT YOU WOULD BE CAST IN NOW - near in age etc etc. Pick naturalistic texts / speeches - no Kane, Artaudian influence etc.
Shakespeare texts are often more difficult ....... remember Central have their own list (check it out on their website) and you need to pick two from there! DON'T USE THESE SPEECHES ANYWHERE ELSE!
There is advice that says don't worry to much about gender (I think this applies more to female picking male rather than the other way around) Be bold and go in with a speech and if they have a problem then have a back up of your gender just in case. The RSC audition workshop says gender blind casting is becoming so much more of a thing and that they encourage it in the auditions!
