Using the grid on the opening of Why Be Happy…?, look in the same way at the opening of your chosen novel and compare the openings in a way that shows how certain key themes of each text are introduced and how this is done.

For example, could identify and exemplify features that give the sense of a spoken voice addressing us in each text, saying why the particular voices come across as they do given the way the events or narrative unfold.

In your introductory paragraph, give a brief outline of each story, highlighting what the main speakers and their stories have in common with one or two key differences.
