Title of Exercise: EXPLORING RESONANCE AREAS
Area of Development: Resonance Areas / Breath Control
Describe the Exercise:

Resonance areas are areas of the body from which you can place sound in order to influence the quality of it. There are 5 different resonance areas and all can be used for different effects. For example the chest resonance portrays a sense of control and power, if you were to lose this control then you might move up to your throat resonance. The 5 areas are: Head, Nasal, Throat, Chest and Lower Back.

We explored these areas by making different sounds. To use your head resonance you need to produce a ’MEE‘ sound. Chest resonance is a ‘MOE’ sound. To ensure we were in the right area we placed our hands on the areas and if they vibrated then we knew we were placing our voices in that area. We then went back to back and tested the other person to see if they knew what resonance area you were in.

It is useful to be able to control your resonance areas as it is a part of characterisation. On top of this, chest resonance enables you to project without straining your voice, unlike throat resonance.
