Example 1: sample resolution (quantisation) Sample resolution reduces, in the sequence (bits): 16, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 1 Each change is indicated by a beep. The quantisation noise (hiss or fuzz) clearly increases with reduction in resolution. Some subtle consequences of bit reduction may be observed, e.g. string tone becomes harsh. Perhaps the most remarkable aspect is that even at the lowest extreme of 1-bit resolution, while massively distorted and all but swamped by the quantisation noise, the music remains surprisingly recognisable. Example 2: sample rate aliasing Source sample rate = 44100 The file names state the sampling rate in each case. Examples 1 and 2 are kindly reproduced with permission from: Professor R.W.
