Jamie Reid
Jamie Reid is a British artist and anarchist with connections to the Situationists and is infamous for his acerbic brand of visual anarchy. Jamie Reid’s signature newspaper-cutting graphics have become synonymous with the spirit of British punk rock music, having appeared on seminal Sex Pistols’ punk records of the 1970s including Never Mind the Bollocks, Anarchy in the UK, Union Jack, God Save the Queen and Pretty Vacant.
Political activism has always been the driving force behind Jamie Reid’s artistic output, having created his ransom note style whilst running radical political magazine Suburban Press. His association with different groups, including Druidry, the Situationist movement and more recently the anti-war movement, are all apparent in his artwork which is witty, ethically motivated and always unabashedly rebellious.
God Save The Queen by Jamie Reid is based on a Cecil Beaton photograph of Queen Elizabeth II, with an added safety pin through her nose and swastikas in her eyes, described by Sean O’Hagan of The Observer as ‘the single most iconic image of the punk era.’ Reid’s design for the Sex Pistols Anarchy in the U.K. poster which features a ripped and safety-pinned Union Flag is regarded as the pivotal work in establishing a distinctive punk visual aesthetic.
Collectors of Jamie Reid’s work include Vivienne Westwood, Robbie Williams, the Gallagher brothers, The Sex Pistols, Boy George, Green Day, Jonathon Ross, Chris Evans, Madonna, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and Angelina Jolie. Her Majesty the Queen paid his Peace is Toughexhibition a visit in Derry, Ireland in 2001, where she commented on the beauty of his work.
Jamie Reid has also been involved in direct action campaigns on issues including the poll tax, Clause 28 and the Criminal Justice Bill. Reid designed the front page of The Times Magazine placing George Bush and Tony Blair on the front with the slogan ‘Lies, Lies, Lies.’ Reid has always played a major role in the Anti-War Movement and his Art has been portrayed world-wide in demonstrations and marches.

Summary
Deadline: One week homework to be completed for the first lesson of the following week
Task: You are to produce an imaginative two-page A4 spread looking at the work of Jamie Reid focusing on the Punk Art movement. Research work by Jamie Reid.
- On tracing paper present research 250 words (size 10pt) biography on Jamie Reid and include information on the punk art movement + analysis of Reid artwork. Include small thumbnail images of a selection of Jamie Reid artworks.
- On side 1 of this HW, create a small digital copy of one of Jamie Reid’s designs. For the rest of this page create your own digital designs in the style of Jamie Reid. Have a minimum of 4 designs to the page. Make all of your designs different in colour, design and techniques that you are using. Include thumbnail swatches of textures/patterns/detail/variations/effects that you incorporate into your designs that link to the punk movement.
- For side 2 of this HW, create a series of 4 x A5 off screen mixed media designs on cartridge paper in the style of Jamie Reid and the punk movement (recommend for you to present 2 A5 designs on side 2 of this HW, and use paper clips to attach your other 2 A5 designs as flaps on the same page).
The theme for your designs is Popular Culture & Current Affairs.
Points for you to think about:
What do you intend to communicate with your designs? What is the message behind each design? How will you create a series of four designs? Carefully consider the layout and composition, why have you placed text and image in certain areas of the designs? How will you create a sense of balance in the designs? Consider the hierarchy of text in your designs. How will you use a combination of off-screen and digital techniques?
Use Pinterest to find interesting Jamie Reid / punk designs to inspire your series of 4 designs
Think about combining typography and photo imagery (from magazines/newspapers). Images can relate to the punk movement. Adapt using some of the following techniques: paint dragged over the surface; layers – apply paint, let it dry/hair dry and apply another layer, repeat if necessary - try scratching/writing into paint, ink splatters/drips, hand cut letters, digitally produced letters print and apply to design.
For this task, you must incorporate spray paint (available to use in the department, please ask technician as they will need to supervise you whilst you spray paint. You are not allowed to spray paint without supervision) – use stencils of letters/shapes to create breaks/shapes in the spray. Consider playing around with political and celebrity culture.
